Two Dead In Alabama After Mass Shooting Following Football Game

Two people died and 14 others suffered gunshot wounds Saturday night when rival groups opened fire on each other in downtown Montgomery, Ala.

The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Bibb and Commerce streets in the city’s tourist district, the Montgomery Advertiser reported. The violence erupted shortly after a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College.

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described the incident as “a mass shooting event.” An adult woman was among those killed, according to Montgomery Police Department (MPD) Lt. Tina McGriff. At least two juveniles were injured, with one suffering life-threatening wounds. (RELATED: Karoline Leavitt Confirms Suspect In Michigan Church Shooting ‘Hated People Of The Mormon Faith’)

“In total, three victims remain in life-threatening condition, and nine sustained non-life-threatening injuries,” McGriff said.

Graboys told WSFA that two parties fired at each other in the middle of a crowd. “People who opened fire on each other like that did not care about the people around them when they did it,” he said. “And now we have 14 people who have been shot.”

Police have not released the identities of those shot, according to the outlet. No arrests have been made.

“Detectives are actively pursuing leads and reviewing evidence, including witness statements and surveillance footage,” McGriff said. “We are urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward. Even the smallest detail could be critical to helping investigators identify those responsible.”State and federal law enforcement agencies are assisting MPD with the investigation. The shooting happened on a busy night when the city debuted a Ferris wheel and other downtown attractions for the game.
